Opposition Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) Supreme Leader Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has said the Maldives once again needs change that comes solely from the people of the country.
Speaking at the function held last evening in Villi-Male as part of his campaign for DRP candidates competing in the upcoming local council election, Gayoom said the Maldives would escape from the current difficulties only by bringing change.
Identifying the reasons for the change, the former president said the country’s economy has collapsed, disrespect to the constitution and laws has become common, several people have lost their jobs, and prominent posts are only reserved for members of a particular party.
Gayoom further stressed that religion and state cannot be separated in an Islamic point of view.
“In the Islamic context, religion and state are two inter related systems that cannot be separated,” he said.
Noting that the Islamic tradition is to govern a country without separating religious affairs and state, the Supreme Leader said the head of the first Islamic State was Prophet Mohamed and the caliphs who came after him were political leaders too.
Separating religion and state is an ideology introduced by people of other religions. In no way, can religion and state be separated in Islam, he added.
DRP Deputy Leader Ilham Ahmed, DRP MPs and Gayoom’s relatives attended the function.
